Milwaukee Band Saw Blades: TPI, Material, and Cut Compatibility

All Posts tools equipment Savesomesum Team

You own three Milwaukee band saws: an M12 compact, an M18 compact, and an M18 deep cut. Each takes a different blade length. You are tired of buying the wrong blade because you cannot remember which saw takes which length. You need a reference guide that covers all Milwaukee band saw blades.

Milwaukee makes band saw blades in four different lengths, each designed for a specific saw model. The blades are not interchangeable between models. Within each length, Milwaukee offers multiple TPI options for different materials and stock thicknesses.

Milwaukee Blade Length Chart

30-9/16 Inches (M12 Compact)

Fits: Milwaukee M12 FUEL Compact Band Saw (2529-20)

Available TPI:

  • 18 TPI (part 48-39-0515): General purpose for conduit, thin pipe, small round stock
  • 24 TPI (part 48-39-0516): Very thin material, sheet metal, small rod

Material: Bi-metal M42 Width: 1/2 inch Thickness: 0.020 inches

This is the shortest Milwaukee blade and is unique to the M12 compact. No other Milwaukee saw or other brand uses this length.

35-3/8 Inches (M18 Compact, Corded Compact)

Fits: Milwaukee M18 FUEL Compact (2829-20), Milwaukee corded compact (6230-20), older M18 compact (2629-20)

Available TPI:

  • 14 TPI (part 48-39-0518): Medium wall pipe, thin bar stock
  • 18 TPI (part 48-39-0519): General purpose, conduit, thin-wall tubing
  • 24 TPI (part 48-39-0520): Sheet metal, small round stock

Material: Bi-metal M42 Width: 1/2 inch Thickness: 0.020 inches

This blade length is shared with the DEWALT 20V mid-size saw (DCS378B). Blades are interchangeable between Milwaukee and DEWALT compact saws.

44-7/8 Inches (M18 Deep Cut, Corded Deep Cut)

Fits: Milwaukee M18 FUEL Deep Cut (2729-20, 2929-20, 2729S-20, 2929S-20), Milwaukee corded deep cut (6232-20, 6232-21)

Available TPI:

  • 8/10 TPI variable pitch (part 48-39-0601): Thick solid bar (2+ inches), heavy wall pipe
  • 10 TPI (part 48-39-0500): General purpose, unistrut, conduit, pipe
  • 10/14 TPI variable pitch (part 48-39-0502): Mixed work, thick and thin material
  • 14 TPI (part 48-39-0510): Medium wall pipe, aluminum, thin bar
  • 14/18 TPI variable pitch (part 48-39-0522): Thin wall tubing, sheet metal
  • 18 TPI (part 48-39-0520): Thin wall tubing, conduit, sheet metal
  • 24 TPI (part 48-39-0530): Very thin sheet metal, small rod

Material: Bi-metal M42 Width: 1/2 inch Thickness: 0.020 inches

This is the most common portable band saw blade length. It is shared with DEWALT deep cut (DCS374B, DCS376B) and Makita 18V LXT (XBP02TX). Blades are interchangeable between all deep cut saws.

32-7/8 Inches (Not a Milwaukee Blade Length)

This length is used by the DEWALT 20V ATOMIC Compact (DCS377B) but is not used by any Milwaukee saw. If you see a 32-7/8 inch blade, it is for a DEWALT compact, not a Milwaukee.

TPI Selection Guide

For Thin Material (Under 1/4 Inch)

Use 18 or 24 TPI. Fine teeth prevent grabbing and tearing in thin material. The small gullets limit chip clearance, so feed rate must be slow. If the blade burns, the TPI is too fine for the material thickness or the feed is too fast.

For Medium Material (1/4 to 1 Inch)

Use 14 or 14/18 TPI. The medium teeth provide a good balance of cut speed and surface finish. Handles thin-wall pipe, conduit, and small bar stock.

For Thick Material (1 to 2 Inches)

Use 10 or 10/14 TPI. The coarser teeth bite deep and clear chips fast. Handles standard pipe, unistrut, and angle iron. The cut is fast but slightly rougher than finer TPI.

For Very Thick Material (2+ Inches)

Use 8/10 TPI variable pitch. The coarse teeth provide maximum cutting force for thick solid bar and heavy wall pipe. The variable pitch breaks up vibration and produces a smoother cut than constant pitch.

For Aluminum

Use 10/14 or 14 TPI. Aluminum produces large, soft chips that load up fine teeth. Coarser teeth clear the chips better. Use a slower feed rate and WD-40 or aluminum cutting fluid to prevent chip welding.

For Stainless Steel

Use 10/14 TPI with slow speed and cutting fluid. Stainless work-hardens if the blade rubs. Keep the feed steady and the speed slow to prevent work-hardening.

Blade Material: Bi-Metal M42

All Milwaukee band saw blades are bi-metal. The cutting edge is M42 high-speed steel, hardened to 67 to 69 HRC. The backing is flexible alloy steel that withstands the flexing around the saw’s wheels.

The M42 edge can cut material up to about RC 38 to 40. For harder materials, you need a carbide-tipped blade, which Milwaukee does not make in portable band saw lengths. For carbide options, look at MK Morse or LENOX.

Blade Break-In

New Milwaukee blades need a break-in period. Run the first 10 to 20 cuts at half feed pressure. This lets the sharp tooth tips wear evenly and prevents micro-chipping.

Skipping break-in can reduce blade life by 30 to 50 percent. The ultra-sharp factory edge has a feather edge that chips under full load. Break-in rounds this edge to a stable cutting profile.

FAQ

Are Milwaukee band saw blades interchangeable with other brands?

If the blade length matches, yes. Milwaukee 44-7/8 inch blades fit DEWALT and Makita deep cut saws. Milwaukee 35-3/8 inch blades fit DEWALT mid-size saws. The 30-9/16 inch blade is unique to Milwaukee.

What is the best all-purpose Milwaukee band saw blade?

For deep cut saws, 10 TPI (part 48-39-0500). For compact saws, 18 TPI (part 48-39-0515 or 48-39-0519 depending on length).

What is variable pitch and why use it?

Variable pitch alternates between two tooth spacings (like 10/14). This breaks up harmonic vibration, reduces noise, and produces smoother cuts. It also lets one blade handle a range of material thicknesses.

How do I know which blade length my Milwaukee saw needs?

M12 compact: 30-9/16 inches. M18 compact or corded compact: 35-3/8 inches. M18 deep cut or corded deep cut: 44-7/8 inches.

Can I use a Milwaukee blade on a non-Milwaukee saw?

Yes, if the blade length matches. Milwaukee blades are industry standard in length and width. The blade quality is good, but LENOX and MK Morse make comparable or better blades in the same sizes.

How often should I replace my Milwaukee band saw blade?

When the cut slows down significantly, the blade starts wandering, or the cut surface becomes rough. A sharp blade cuts smoothly with light pressure.
